Circle of Same
A patient recently presented me with an interesting topic that sparked my thinking process. He runs a social media marketing company and was stating that in order to get different results, we must make change. He referred to this as the “circle of same.” Essentially, if we continually repeat the same behaviors, we will get the same results. Although he was applying this to his company and how they approach marketing, this concept holds true when we talk about our health. This reminds me of one of my favorite health quotes from Hippocrates, the father of medicine. He stated “if someone wishes for good health, one must first ask oneself if he is ready to do away with the reasons for his illness. Only then is it possible to help him.” This concept remains true when it comes to consulting patients in the functional medicine realm. My job is to figure out why a patient has a particular disease or condition, come up
with a game plan to fix it (dietary changes, supplementation, lifestyle modifications) and assist as each patient implements those changes to ultimately restore their health. All of this is up to the patient. Over and over again I hear people talking about that they want to feel better, or that they are tired of feeling the way that they do, but don’t want to make the necessary changes to get better. I’ve heard the excuses, “I already eat healthy” or “I don’t have the time” and “I’ll start my diet on Monday.” We constantly rely on excuses to avoid change because it’s uncomfortable and foreign. We often get stuck in routines and habits as a result of the fear of change. It can be scary. It can be challenging. However change is essential if you want live life without chronic debilitating health issues. My job as a functional medicine doctor is to help you with those changes. I will act as a mentor and coach to help guide you towards a better lifestyle. More importantly, my goal is to help you realize that you deserve to have a healthy life!
