The Benefits of Red Light Therapy

Red light therapy is a natural form of therapy gaining traction among the holistic health and wellness crowd as a means of promoting healing at a cellular level. While you may be inclined to think a red light treatment entails a scientifically-complex procedure, during a therapy session, light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs simply shine red or near-infrared (NIR) light onto one’s skin. While it is a relatively simple method of promoting health and optimal wellness, the benefits are immense. Not to mention, it’s safe, non-invasive, and completely painless.

What is Red Light Therapy


During a red light therapy treatment, non-invasive wavelengths of light are emitted from LED bulbs. This light is intended to shine directly onto the skin where it is subsequently absorbed into the body’s tissue. This natural light–which does not produce heat–shines on the skin for up to 20 minutes at a time. This exposure to light encourages the cells in our body to make more energy by stimulating our mitochondria and enhancing the cellular respiration process that makes a molecule called ATP adenosine triphosphate (ATP) which is responsible for carrying and providing energy to our cells.


Routinely stimulating our mitochondria is important because their dysfunction has been linked to many chronic diseases and illnesses. This dysfunction can stem from a multitude of factors such as diet, lifestyle, chronic stress, and aging. Thankfully, red light therapy provides a simple solution.


Benefits of Red Light Therapy


One of the most common uses for red light therapy is at skin-level. Red light therapy has been celebrated for its anti-aging benefits because it encourages skin rejuvenation and promotes the production of elastin and collagen–both of which decline with age. It can also provide other benefits to the skin such as promoting the healing of wounds (think reduction of the appearance of scars and stretch marks) as well as treating chronic skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.


But the benefits of red light therapy don’t just stop at the skin. A red light session can also:


  • Reduce inflammation in the body;

  • Increase the circulation of blood by bringing oxygen to the area being treatment and carrying away any toxins or waste than may have accumulated there;
